‘THE UNFILTERED TRUTH - BREWING COST CRISIS’
Let’s talk coffee. Not the kind brewed quietly in your kitchen, but the kind that fuels café culture, barista banter, and the everyday Aussie ritual. The cost of your morning cup has crept higher—painfully so. What was once a $4 flat white in pre-COVID days has edged closer to $6 or $7, and forecasts warn of $10+ cups on the horizon.
MARKETS ARE NEVER BORING!
There doesn’t seem to be a day go by where we are not reading about a new major global or political event that gives us pause for thought. While we are not a macro investor, we do run a range of scenarios to stress test the credit worthiness of our borrowers…

IT FEELS GOOD TO BE LOVED!
ROADNIGHT'S OBSERVATIONS ON PRIVATE CREDIT
It feels good to be loved! After years of explaining to anyone and everyone who would listen to what private credit is, it seems like now, everywhere you look, someone is commenting on private credit. Not wanting to be left out now that we have an audience, we wanted to provide our observations on where private credit sits and how we see it developing.
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE US?
The Australian economy does not operate in a vacuum. Rather, it is connected via travel, global markets and trade to the rest of the world (which in practice is primarily the US, EU, China and Japan). As we saw during the GFC, the performance of subprime housing in the US ended up impacting Australian banks and the share market.
UNEARTHING GREAT INVESTMENTS
Investing is not just about coming up with an idea. The reality is investment managers are evaluated on whether an investment makes money or not and is 100% measurable. There is nowhere to hide for ongoing underperformance.

PUBLIC VERSUS PRIVATE MARKETS
The general perception in finance is that private markets are riskier than public markets. This perception is most evident in rating agencies and regulators’ higher capital requirements for private market investments than public investments.

HOW DO YOU GENERATE SUPERIOR INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE IN PRIVATE CREDIT?
There are many ways to slice and dice the investment universe. We list some of the characteristic’s investors consider.
PRIVATE DEBT’S ROLE IN AN INVESTOR’S PORTFOLIO
Private debt offers investors the ability to:
• improve returns from allocations to fixed income
• provide a source of income that is less correlated to other investments
• provide greater downside protection
PRIVATE DEBT FUNDING TO AGRICULTURE
The long term or secular demand outlook for agriculture are compelling reasons for investors to consider agricultural exposure as part of a well diversified investment portfolio.
PRICING PRIVATE CREDIT RISK IN THE CURRENT ENVIRONMENT
In past musings, we have reflected on concentrating on what is in front of us, managing risk in an uncertain environment, lessons from GFC and Covid, and explaining what private debt is.
Roadnight Capital is continuing to pursue its strategic growth agenda to take advantage of the Private Debt market opportunity by investing in people, processes and systems.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of the following executives with deep domain expertise to the team
PRIVATE DEBT: NOT YOUR AVERAGE ASSET CLASS
Not surprisingly in our various discussions with investors we have been asked a variety of questions about Private Debt. Given this we thought that it made sense to provide a Q and A on the Australian Private Debt market.
FORGOTTEN LESSONS
While you might expect that each economic shock (either global or local) which happens would generate a raft of valuable lessons that are used to avoid similar mistakes in the future, this is often not the case. As Mark Twain said “history does not repeat itself, but it does often rhyme”.
Like many things, investing requires deciding what to invest in without knowing how future events will impact the investment. To assess an investment opportunity, it is necessary to hypothesise and plan how various scenarios or economic environments will affect the investment.
